Israeli army issues renewed call for Gazans to flee to the south

Tel Aviv, 28 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Israel's army has again called on people still in the northern Gaza Strip and Gaza City to immediately relocate south, referring to an "impending military operation."

"This is an urgent military advisory... This is not a mere precaution," army spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a statement posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

"Your window to act is closing," he said, adding that the call to flee was for the safety of civilians.

"A return to northern Gaza will be possible once the intense hostilities end," Hagari said without providing a specific time frame.

The Israeli army had already repeatedly called on the people in the north of the Gaza Strip to flee to the south of the territory, which has largely been sealed off.

According to Israeli military figures, at least 700,000 people have already moved south within Gaza. The United Nations believes as many as 1.4 million Gazans are internally displaced.

In total, more than 2.2 million people live in the densely populated area.
