Iranian general threatens fresh rocket attack on Israel

Tehran, 2 July 2024 (dpa/MIA) - A high-ranking Iranian general has threatened arch-enemy Israel with a massive new missile attack.

According to state media, the Air Force Commander of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, voiced the harsh rhetoric at an event in Tehran on Monday.

A few months ago, Iran and Israel were on the brink of a major regional war. The Revolutionary Guards had fired hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel on April 13 this year.

The background to the attack was a suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital Damascus, in which two generals were killed at the beginning of April.

Hajizadeh now said he hoped for the opportunity of a second such operation. "I don't know how many missiles it will take," he added.

The threat is likely to be linked to recent tensions between Israel and Lebanon.

At the weekend the Iranian UN mission threatened a "devastating war" in the event of an escalation between Israel and the Hezbollah militia.

Following the start of the Gaza war, the decades-old conflict between Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran has escalated dramatically.

The Jewish state finds itself under fire on several fronts following attacks by militias allied with Iran.

Since the 1979 revolution, the US and Israel have been considered arch-enemies of the Islamic Republic. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also labelled Iran as the "most important enemy" in the past.
