Iran detains container ship with alleged Israeli connection

Tehran, 13 April 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The navy of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has detained a container ship in the Gulf allegedly linked to Israel, the Tasnim news agency reported on Saturday.

A photo distributed by the news agency, which is considered the mouthpiece of the IRGC, shows a commando rappelling from a military helicopter onto the deck of the ship.

No further information was initially available.

The UKMTO maritime agency, which is part of the British Navy, previously reported on the incident without naming Iran. It said it occurred about 50 nautical miles north-east of the port city of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

Iran's navy has seized oil tankers and container ships in these waters in the past.

Military tensions in the region are higher than they have been for years.

Following the suspected Israeli airstrike on Iran's embassy compound in Syria on April 1, in which two brigadier generals died, the leadership in Tehran has threatened Israel with retaliation.
