Iotova: Bulgaria under a lot of pressure to lift veto
Sofia, 22 September 2021 (MIA) – Bulgaria keeps on being under a lot of pressure from Europe to lift its veto to the opening of negotiations between the EU and North Macedonia, Bulgarian Vice President Iliana Iotova told Bulgarian National Radio.
At the same time, she added, the EU has lot more understanding about Sofia’s demands towards Skopje in connection to the right of people with Bulgarian identity.
The Vice President offered several options in order Bulgaria’s demands to be included in North Macedonia’s negotiating framework with the EU.
“Whether these conditions we’ve laid down will be in the first chapter or whether they will be included and lasting as a red thread throughout the process of negotiations, or whether they will be incorporated in the 36th chapter is a matter of consideration provided that the Bulgarian position is taken into account,” stated Iotova.
The matter will be discussed at the forthcoming EU-Western Balkans Summit, organized by Slovenia’s EU presidency in October.
