Institutions should act in line with laws, free from external influences, Ahmeti tells Kop

Skopje, 10 January 2024 (MIA) - The law on vetting for judges, prosecutors, and politicians has been in the Parliament for a longer period, but the EU initially had reservations about this process. Regarding the Supreme Court, the Judicial Council is responsible for acting in accordance with the laws without any internal or external pressure. This message was conveyed by the leader of the Democratic Union for Integration, Ali Ahmeti, during Wednesday's meeting with the Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop, as reported by DUI.

Regarding the meeting between Ahmeti and Kop, the Embassy of the Netherlands in the country had previously announced, stating that the Dutch Ambassador "conveyed a message that North Macedonia's commitment to EU membership is at risk due to the ongoing decline in the rule of law in the country," and that "inappropriate political influence on the position of the President of the Supreme Court is unacceptable."

During the meeting, as reported by DUI, Ahmeti and Kop discussed the influences of the East in the region, the rule of law, reforms, as well as the importance of European integration.

The discussion between Ahmeti and Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop, as reported by DUI, included topics such as the rule of law and the vetting process of all judges and prosecutors.

In a Wednesday meeting with the leader of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), Ali Ahmeti, Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop conveyed the message that North Macedonia's commitment to EU membership is threatened by the steady decline of the rule of law in the country.

"Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop met with DUI leader Ali Ahmeti to convey the message that after a two year steady decline in the Rule of Law, the commitment of North Macedonia to EU membership is at risk across the political spectrum," the Embassy of the Netherlands in North Macedonia wrote on Facebook.

According to the photograph attached the meeting took place at DUI headquarters, the text highlighted the Embassy's position on the political influence on Supreme Court President, Besa Ademi.

"Also, undue political influence on the position of the President of the Supreme Court, which is a judicial matter, is unacceptable and will elicit a strong reaction from the Netherlands," the post reads.
