Illegal migration drops by 50 percent, says Bojmacaliev

Skopje, 11 March 2024 (MIA) - Additional Deputy Minister of Interior Mitko Bojmacaliev attended Monday a coordination meeting with the regional center "Jug" management, representatives of relevant state institutions, international organizations and NGOs, part of the national component in managing various migration trends.

The meeting focused on the latest positive report of the Ombudsman, resulting from the coordinated activities of these institutions when dealing with illegal migrants in the Gevgelija-based Vinojug transit center, the Ministry of Interior said in a press release.

Deputy Minister Bojmacaliev said in the meeting remarks that 2023 was marked by the ratification and operationalization of the agreement between the Republic of North Macedonia and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).

"This agreement enables specific field support in maintaining border security. The EU sees this agreement as a specific step in preserving the Union's security, since protection of the Macedonian borders from migrant flows, illegal migration and cross-border crime protects EU's borders," said Bojmacaliev.

According to official MoI statistics, he added, illegal migration has drooped by 50 percent, which is largely owed to the police officers and the regional center Jug management.

"These are not just numbers but many joint activities that involve lots of effort, commitment, professionalism and humanity. Let me extend my respect and gratitude to all institutions, international organizations and stakeholders involved in this process," said Bojmacaliev.

He also thanked the EU for its continued assistance to the Ministry of Interior through regional IPA projects, expressing assurance that the Master Plan developed by Frontex would be implemented in the coming period as one of the country's strategic priorities when it comes to meeting international standards in the field, reads the press release.
