Hurkacz outlasts Rublev in Shanghai final after saving match point

Berlin, 15 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Hubert Hurkacz saved a match point on Sunday as he outlasted Andrey Rublev, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8) to win the Shanghai Masters title and improve his chances of playing at next month's ATP Finals.

The 16th-seeded Hurkacz survived the match point at 6-5 in the third-set tie-break before converting his fourth match point after 2 hours 9 minutes.

Hurkacz fired 21 aces and won 81% of his first-service points in the final in which each player managed just one break.

Fifth-seed Rublev, who had not dropped a set in Shanghai into the final, had 13 aces.

Hurkacz claimed his seventh career title in his eighth final and rose to 11th place in this year's rankings, with the top eight qualifying for the season-ender in Turin.

He is just 335 points behind Holger Rune in eighth, with eight tournaments left before the finals.

Rublev is fifth in the list, behind Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner who have secured their place in Turin.
