Hristijan Mickoski takes office as prime minister

Skopje, 24 June 2024 (MIA) – The new Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski took office Monday succeeding the outgoing caretaker prime minister Talat Xhaferi.

Mickoski and Xhaferi held a brief meeting during the takeover without speaking to members of the media.

Outgoing PM Xhaferi congratulated Mickoski on taking office wishing him success and efficient work in the interest of all citizens in the country, his office said.

“It was concluded that the caretaker government and the state institutions successfully completed the task of organizing free, fair and democratic elections and allowing peaceful and democratic handover of power. This is seen as a contribution to a European conduct of the country, which aims to become a full-fledged member of the European Union. The outgoing PM Xhaferi said the country still needs quality reforms in order to improve the quality of living standards according to the European democratic standards and values. Also, hope for high political awareness and cooperation over strategic priorities was expressed,” said the press release.

Mickoski later in the day is expected to pay a working visit to Shtip.

Following a two-day debate, Parliament on late Sunday elected the new government with 77 votes in favor and 22 against. The new government cabinet includes 20 ministries – four more than in the last government.

Mickoski is the 13th prime minister who is at the helm of the 20th government since the country’s declaration of independence.
