Grkovska: Pre-election, election period an opportunity to show country's maturity

Skopje, 15 February 2024 (MIA) - Fair elections are the basis and main prerequisite for incorporating all other principles of good governance defined by the Council of Europe. In order to ensure a fair and democratic environment, it is imperative that all stakeholders act responsibly and ethically, and avoid endangering the integrity of the election process, Deputy Prime Minister of Good Governance Slavica Grkovska says in an open letter to election participants.

With the scheduling of the elections and the start of the pre-election period, she states, it is important that every participant is mindful of the laws and ethical principles when performing their responsibilities.

"Our generation cannot allow a repeat of events from the not-so-distant past, instances of intimidation and abuse, compromised elections that only set the country back. Our shared duty is to ensure a safe and democratic environment in which every voter can freely exercise his/her democratic right. Institutions are first on the line of responsibility, but we are all part of the picture," notes Grkovska.

According to her, regardless of political affiliations or belonging, priority in political action must be given to the well-being of citizens and mutual trust between communities in our multicultural society.

This means that we should not only comply with the provisions of the electoral and other laws, but also set higher ethical standards, and thus help the country move forward. Everyone following one's own example and share of responsibility for the benefit of all, reads the letter.

In these challenging times, it adds, transparent electoral campaigns are especially important, because citizens must be allowed to make decision based on accurate information.

"Fake news, harmful narratives and disinformation serve the opposite. That is why it is important for all political entities to openly and honestly present their political programs, without manipulation," emphasizes Grkovska.

She believes that eliminating discrimination, intolerance and hate speech in public discourse is as equally important in order to improve the country's overall political culture.

"The pre-election and election period is an opportunity to show the maturity of our democracy and its stakeholders. Therefore, it is important that every office holder or candidate leads by personal example, adhering to ethical standards and democratic principles. At no time should we forget that anyone seeking trust in elections should act in the best interest of our citizens and country," underlines Grkovska. ssh/ik/
