Grkovska – Waly: Cooperation between North Macedonia and UNODC to continue by strengthening judicial integrity

Skopje, 15 December 2023 (MIA) – Within the frameworks of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (CoSP10) which is being held in Atlanta, U.S., the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of good governance policies, Slavica Grkovska, held a working meeting with the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Ghada Waly.

 

 

According to a government press release, at the meeting Deputy Prime Minister Grkovska voiced gratitude for the support provided by the UNODC for North Macedonia, especially in the implementation of the 2021-2023 National Strategy for Financial Investigations and Confiscation of Assets.

 

At the same time, Grkovska voiced her conviction that the cooperation will continue and grow, and proposed that the UNODC joins the project for the establishment of a regional good governance academy, which is being realized by the Deputy PM’s Office in cooperation with the Council of Europe.

 

Director Waly congratulated Deputy PM Grkovska on her successful participation in CoSP10, noting that the activities presented by North Macedonia’s delegation resulted in positive reactions among the participants. She expressed her interest in providing support for the establishment of a regional good governance academy.

 

Waly noted that the UNODC is paying special attention to the Western Balkans region and stressed that work is currently being done on several parallel projects aimed at strengthening the mechanisms for tackling corruption and organized crime.

 

Grkovska and Waly agreed to continue their mutual communication in the coming period in order to tailor the projects implemented by the UNODC to the needs of North Macedonia. They also agreed to enhance cooperation on strengthening judicial integrity.
