Washington, 16 June 2024 (dpa/MIA) - US swimmer Gretchen Walsh set a women's world record in the 100 metre butterfly at the US Olympic trials in Indianapolis on Saturday.

The 21-year-old clocked 55.18 seconds in the semi-finals of the trials, smashing the 55.48 record set by Sweden's Sarah Sjoestroem at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Walsh is hoping to go to her first Olympic Games. Despite her record-breaking performance, she will still have to finish in the top two in Sunday's final to lock in a spot on the US team.

The Paris Olympics begin on July 26.
