Governor: Dozens of workers stranded after mine blast in Turkey
Dozens of workers have been stranded in a coal mine following an explosion in northern Turkey, the provincial governor said on Friday evening, according to state broadcaster TRT. Up to 49 workers are believed to be stranded in the mine in Black Sea province Bartın's Amasra district, TRT quoted Bartın Governor Nurtaç Arslan as saying. Rescue efforts are underway, Arslan said. An injured person was brought to an ambulance on a stretcher, broadcaster HaberTürk footage showed. The exact number of workers on site at the time of the explosion was not immediately clear. A malfunction at the mine's power distribution unit caused the explosion, disaster authority AFAD said. Turkey's energy and interior ministers are on their way to the site, some 300 kilometres north of the capital Ankara, TRT said.
