Government initiates revoking of Onyshchenko citizenship
Skopje, 23 November 2022 (MIA) – In line with Article 14 of the Law on Citizenship, the Government initiated Wednesday a procedure to cancel the decision granting citizenship to Ukrainian national Oleksandr Onyshchenko.
The Government has initiated the request for revoking Onyshchenko’s citizenship, after the National Security Agency (NSA) briefed the Cabinet on the case, the Government said in a press release.
Onyshchenko, who is sanctioned by the United States over his ties with the Russian authorities, was granted Macedonian citizenship as an equestrian athlete at the proposal of the Equestrian Federation. The Government passed the decision after receiving a positive opinion from all competent institutions.
Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski said yesterday that responsibility in the case must be established through the ongoing investigation. According to media reports, two NSA officers have been suspended for negligence in Onyshchenko’s clearance procedure.
