Germany, Belgium and Dutch hand in bid for 2027 Women's World Cup

Germany, Belgium and Dutch hand in bid for 2027 Women's World Cup

Frankfurt, 8 December 2023 (dpa/MIA) — Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands officially submitted their bid to FIFA on Friday to host the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The documents were sent in time, the German Football Federation (DFB) said in a statement. Brazil and a joint bid from the US and Mexico are also in the running.

The aim of the European bid is to increase revenue by 50% compared to the 2023 World Cup.

The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in July and August racked up record revenues totalling $570 million.

The three joint bidders for 2027 have called their bid "Breaking New Ground," using the initials of each country in English.

The hosting decision will be made on May 17 next year at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok.

The US, which will organize the next men's World Cup in 2026 together with Mexico and Canada, already hosted the Women's World Cup in 1999 and 2003. The tournament has never been to South America.

Germany, which already hosted the Women's World Cup in 2011, is entering the race with the four cities of Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Gelsenkirchen and Cologne - all near the borders with their fellow bidders.

Belgium would like to organize World Cup matches in Brussels, Charleroi, Genk and Gent, while the Netherlands are putting forward Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Heerenveen, Enschede and Rotterdam.

The final selection of 10 venues would be made by FIFA. The World Cup groups would be drawn in Brussels.
