German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd executed in Iran on terrorism charges

Tehran, 28 October 2024 (dpa/MIA) - German-Iranian dual national Jamshid Sharmahd was executed in Iran on terrorism charges on Monday morning, according to the official Iranian judiciary news site Misan.

A revolutionary court ruled in February 2023 that the 69-year-old was responsible for a terrorist attack and also charged him with cooperating with foreign intelligence services.

The allegations could not be verified. Sharmahd was convicted of "corruption on earth" according to Islamic law.

The Supreme Court upheld the sentence against Sharmahd in April 2023, despite demands by human rights activists - and Sharmahd's daughter Gazelle, who lives in the United States - to halt it.

Sharmahd had also been living in the US for many years before he was reportedly arrested by Iranian intelligence services in Dubai in 2020 and brought to Iran. Since then, he has been imprisoned in Tehran.

The German government had strongly criticized the sentence and called for Sharmahd's release.

The execution is likely to lead to new tensions in relations between Iran and Germany, which deteriorated following the wave of protests in Iran in 2022 and the government's subsequent violent crackdown.

In Iran, death sentences are usually carried out by hanging. Executions of Western foreigners in the country are extremely rare.
