Wiesbaden, Germany, 13 April 2023 (dpa/MIA) - German imports from Russia have fallen significantly since Moscow launched the war on Ukraine, according to the latest statistics.

In February 2023, the monthly value of all goods imports from Russia fell to some €300 million ($330 million), 91% less than a year earlier, the Federal Statistical Office said on Thursday.

Supplies of Russian energy slumped in particular, which had played an important role in trade between the two states before the start of the war on February 24, 2022.

Imports of Russian crude oil and natural gas fell from €2.2 billion in February 2022 to just €4.2 million a year later, a fall of 99.8%.

Imports of coke and petroleum products fell from €353 million to €30 million, a decrease of 91.4%.

Coal imports decreased by 92.5% to €26 million.

Overall, Russia fell from 11th to 46th place among Germany's most important suppliers of goods.

German goods exports to the country decreased by 60.5% to around €800 million compared to February 2022.

The changes come after Western governments slammed sanctions on Russia in an attempt to halt the Kremlin's war on Ukraine. Germany was affected in particular due to its formerly heavy dependence on energy supplies from Russia.
