Athens, 20 May 2024 (MIA) - The Prespa Agreement is an internationally ratified treaty and cannot be unilaterally altered or revised, Greece's Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said in an interview with Greek Talk Radio 98.9, MIA's Athens correspondent reported.

In a morning interview, Foreign Minister Gerapetritis highlighted that “there is an issue arising from the elections in North Macedonia at this moment, while also emphasizing their complete respect for the election results.”

"What we always stress is that regardless of the differences, both ideological and political, the new political leadership towards the Prespa Agreement acknowledges it as an internationally ratified treaty. It cannot be unilaterally altered or revised by either party. It stands as a cornerstone upon which North Macedonia's international relations were built. It is assumed that the European Union evaluates the matters pertaining to the Prespa Agreement and its comprehensive and consistent implementation. Therefore, I believe that North Macedonia's political leadership will assess these matters and align with the provisions of the Prespa Agreement," Gerapetritis noted.

He added that Greece, for its part, is following the consistent implementation of the Agreement and reminded that “today’s government majority, as opposition, timely pointed out the gray areas of the Agreement.”

“For me, what matters is that we should respect the agreements made, not because we necessarily agree with them but because it’s a treaty for continuity and stability. In any case, we cannot establish a unilateral framework upon which political careers are built,” Gerapetritis said.

Additionally, he once again categorically denied the reports in the Greek media suggesting his involvement in drafting the Prespa Agreement, noting that he was unaware of a single line of the text before its public release.
