Geer: We expect constitutional changes to pass so country moves forward on EU path

Skopje, 15 April 2024 (MIA) — EU Ambassador David Geer declined to comment on European Front coalition presidential candidate Bujar Osmani's statement that constitutional changes would be a condition for forming the next government but reiterated that he expected the amendments, once adopted, would help the country progress toward EU membership.

Geer spoke to the press ahead of a panel discussion at Europe House on the role of civil society in the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans.

In response to a reporter's question whether the condition to adopt the amendments would provoke a political crisis, the EU Delegation head said the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution would continue the country's path toward the European Union.

Pointing out he would not answer any questions on political matters amid the ongoing election campaign, Geer said the EU expected that the constitutional amendments would be adopted, allowing the country to progress on its way to the European Union. "We want to see this happen as soon as possible," he said.

The panel discussion was titled “Consolidating Civil Society Involvement in the Economic and Investment Plan: The Way Forward.” It was organized by the Estima association, the Cooperation and Development Institute Albania, and the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community. mr/
