Geer: Use of EU flag to laws that are not aligning EU legislation is a concern

Skopje, 10 May 2023 (MIA) – When you are aligning your legislation with the legislation of the EU, the EU standards, then you can use the system of EU flag. As regards the laws related to the Bechtel-Enka project, our concern is the use of the EU flag here, which is inappropriate given there is no alignment of EU legislation, EU Ambassador David Geer told reporters on Wednesday after official start of the EU-funded project “Support to Forestry Reforms in North Macedonia.”

According to Geer, the EU flag exists because on your way to the EU, this country and all countries, have to adopt thousands and thousands of pieces of legislation, this takes a huge amount of parliamentary time.

“If you were to go through normal procedures, it would take decades. So, we have the system of the EU flag. When you are aligning your legislation with the legislation of the EU, the EU standards, then you can use the EU flag. What you can’t do is use the EU flag when you have procedures which are not aligning EU legislation or because you have procedural problems in parliament. Our comment on this is merely on this issue as regards the laws related to the Bechtel-Enka project, our concern is the use of the EU flag here, which is inappropriate given there is no alignment of EU legislation,” Geer said.
