Geer on referendum: Any initiative constituting a backward step to be avoided
Skopje, 13 September 2022 (MIA) – Any initiative that might constitute a backward step, hindering the country’s European integration path should be avoided, says EU Ambassador David Geer on VMRO-DPMNE’s referendum initiative against the Bulgaria Friendship Treaty. “I remember when this issue of the constitutional change was first discussed, way back last year, there was not opposition across the political spectrum, it was pretty silent on this particular question,” Ambassador Geer told 360 degrees. He adds that goodneighborly relations are an essential part of the accession process. “The EU has said on a number of occasions that the Bulgaria Friendship Treaty, as well as the Prespa Agreement, need to be implemented in good faith, by everyone”, says Geer.
