Skopje, 3 May 2023 (MIA) - On World Press Freedom Day, we are celebrating journalism and its crucial role in maintaining freedom of expression for promotion of open societies and public accountability. The existence of free, independent and pluralistic media is vital for democracy and the overall resilience of all societies, said European Union Ambassador David Geer at the blood drive on occasion of World Press Freedom Day, organized by the Independent Union of Journalists and Media Workers, the Skopje Red Cross and the Association of Journalists of Macedonia on Wednesday.
"This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which laid the foundations for a freer, more just and a better world. And here, freedom of expression is crucial and contributes decisively in the fulfillment of all other human rights. Journalists' jobs are often difficult, they are often subjected to pressure, threats and too often hate speech, especially online. They face a lack of openness when gathering information. Their labor rights are often disrespected and in today's world they often face enormous additional challenges as a result of the proliferation of disinformation in the public sphere daily," said Ambassador Geer.
In spite of all of this, he added, many journalists and media workers in this country and around the world continue to work relentlessly and in line with professional standards, provide facts in the face of falsehood, clarity where there is evasion and speak the truth.
"By doing so, they provide a crucial service to the public at large, who as a result, are able to make decisions and form opinions based on the best information available, while also serving as watchdogs on power and the work of institutions, and shining a light on wrongdoing of any kind. The EU has been a long-standing and strong supporters of freedom of expression and the role of the media. Inside the EU, the European Commission has recently initiated a discussion on how to strengthen protection through a new draft-European Media Freedom Act. Externally, our support includes the use of policy dialogue and expert assistance to strengthen legislation and institutions linked to the media," noted Geer.
In addition, the EU provides financial assistance to civil society and media organizations, increasing the journalists' capacities, providing free legal aid, recognizing achievements through awards, advocating for greater safety and a better socio-economic status of journalists, as well as fighting against disinformation.
"I am very proud to join today the blood donation organized by our partners, the Independent Union of Journalists and Media Workers and the Association of Journalists of Macedonia, because we share the same goals. Blood donation saves lives, just as professional journalism is the lifeblood of democracy and open societies," concluded Geer.
