Gashi: We will try to change '20 percent' wording about Albanian language, it is a matter of political agreement
- Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said Thursday "we will try to replace the wording of 'the language spoken by 20 percent of the population' with 'Albanian language'," pointing out that it was a matter of political agreement.
Skopje, 28 November 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said Thursday "we will try to replace the wording of 'the language spoken by 20 percent of the population' with 'Albanian language'," pointing out that it was a matter of political agreement.
"We will try to change the wording. This is a matter of political agreement, whether it makes political sense at the moment for all parties to perceive this request of the Albanians - to use the correct name for the Albanian language, instead of any other backup wordings related to percentages," Gashi told Thursday's press briefing.
The Speaker noted that all Albanian MPs and parties have a single position regarding the wording about the Albanian language in the Constitution, which, he added, doesn't show respect for any Albanian.
Gashi said there has been no discussion about a possible situation where the Constitutional Court rules that the three disputed articles of the Law on Languages should be returned to the Parliament.
"We have not discussed that, because that is a matter for the Constitutional Court. I think we should wait and see what the Constitutional Court will do, and then we'll discuss in case of a possible new situation, but I hope there is no need for such a situation, but if there is then we will discuss it," said Gashi.
