Gashi: Parliamentary Committee on Social Policy should decide on Defenders Law

Skopje, 26 September 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi told a press briefing on Thursday that the Rules of Procedure deprive him of a possibility to convene a parliamentary committee session that had already been convened. He pointed out that it remains in the domain of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Policy, Demography and Youth to decide on the amendments to the Defenders Law.

"I am deprived of a possibility to convene a session that has already been convened on a specific day when that issue was to be acted on. So yes, it remains in the domain of the Committee on Social Policy, Demography and Youth to decide on the law on special rights of members of the security forces and their family members," he said.

In response to a reporter's question on whether the Parliamentary Committee on Social Policy chair Ilire Dauti has violated the Rules of Procedure by refusing to convene a session with this item on the agenda, Gashi said that he, as Parliament Speaker, is obliged to apply the Rules of Procedure, not to judge.

"As Parliament Speaker, I am obliged to apply the Rules of Procedure, but I am not the one to judge whether someone has violated it or not. That remains a space for interpretation of a different political aspect, legal aspect, etc. Everyone can judge it as they see it. I think that's another question, I can't be the judge of that," said Gashi.
