Gashi - Frangeš: Western Balkans' EU accession should happen sooner

Skopje, 4 July 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi met Thursday with the Special Envoy for the Western Balkans of the Republic of Slovenia, Anžej Frangeš. Gashi expressed gratitude for Slovenia's efforts in appointing a Special Envoy for the Western Balkans, thus reaffirming its commitment to the European perspective of the countries in the region, the Parliament said in a press release.

"Slovenia is a sincere, friendly country, a strong supporter of European integration. Its commitment to keeping the issue of enlargement high on the agenda of the European Union is especially appreciated. The Western Balkans' EU accession should happen as soon as possible, because the Balkan people are Europeans too, and this benefits not only these countries, but also the Union itself. In that regard, the issue of constitutional amendments as an obstacle to joining the great European family should be resolved as soon as possible, and the reform process should continue. The help and support of the Special Envoy Frangeš is welcome, as he is a great connoisseur of the region," reads the press release.

Frangeš wished Parliament Speaker Gashi successful work in his new post, noting that parliamentary democracy is very important.

"Interlocutors left an open door for cooperation, with more frequent meetings and a more active role in the coming period," the press release adds.
