Gashi – Leclerc: North Macedonia a regional example on tackling statelessness

Skopje, 12 December 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi held a meeting Thursday with the UNHCR Regional Director for Europe, Philippe Leclerc, during which they spoke about the country’s policies in relation to refugees and stateless people. They affirmed that North Macedonia serves as an example in the region when it comes to solving the issue of statelessness.

“Speaker Gashi noted that over the past 30 years the country has had a very successful and intensive cooperation with the UNHCR, focused on promoting the rights and improving the status of refugees, which has resulted in a series of successful projects. He recalled that the country has demonstrated its humane attitude to refugees from the region, but also from the Middle East and Ukraine, on several occasions,” Parliament said in a press release.

According to the press release, Gashi noted that in times of global challenges, the world is obliged to help the refugees overcome their challenges faster and gain opportunities for a dignified life as a basic human right.

The UNHCR Director for Europe stressed that North Macedonia serves as an example for the region and beyond when it comes to the issue of tackling statelessness, adding that the work done by the country has led to concrete and tangible results.

Leclerc highlighted UNHCR’s cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and suggested that Speaker Gashi present the country’s successful policies in tackling statelessness within the frameworks of the organization.
