Galichica fire under control, 100 firefighters engaged on the ground

Ohrid, 16 August 2024 (MIA) - The situation with the wildfire on Galichica Mountain is under control and is being monitored. 120 firefighters were engaged in the firefighting efforts on Thursday, as well as five aircraft, said the head of fire protection at the Galichica National Park, Gjuro Jovchevski on Friday.

According to Jovchevski, the fire has been placed under control on the eastern front. He said 100 firefighters are fighting the blazes on Friday.

Fire protection belts were created in the areas towards Ohrid, those sections of the fire are calm, and no problems are expected, Jovchevski said.

The most critical section according to Jovchevski is the western front of the fire, but the situation has been placed under control as well, despite indications that certain hotspots could emerge.

He added that hundreds of detonations from grenades and other munitions leftover from the First World War have been heard since the beginning of the fire 12 days ago.

The fire is calming down and is expected to be completely extinguished, he said.
