French-German commemoration in Bitola and Prilep on Armistice Day

French-German commemoration in Bitola and Prilep on Armistice Day
Prilep, 10 November 2022 (MIA) - To mark World War I Armistice Day (Commémoration du 11 novembre 1918) and People’s Day of Mourning (Volkstrauertag), the embassies of France and Germany paid tribute Thursday to all perished, wounded, missing and displaced persons, victims of violence in all conflicts and of all nations. Commemorations, during which wreaths were laid by officials of the assembly, the defense ministry, local authorities and several embassies, were held at the German Military Cemetery in Prilep and the French Military Cemetery in Bitola. Speaking in Prilep, Otto Graf, Germany's Deputy Ambassador said that Europe today needs a policy of reconciliation that won't turn into nationalism. Asked how it is possible that one EU country is blocking another although it had met all the membership criteria and why bilateral disputes hinder the accession process, Graf said the Union has always had disagreements adding Germany will help the disputes are settled in a better way. We shouldn't look back in history, he stated, we need to think clear-headedly and focus on the major challenges ahead rather than deal with trivial and emotional things. French Ambassador Cyrille Baumgartner in his speech called for reconciliation and unity in the wake of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. He mention that this past summer North Macedonia saw its European perspective being opened with France's incentives and support from all EU member countries.
