Former US president Jimmy Carter celebrates 100th birthday

Former US president Jimmy Carter celebrates 100th birthday

Washington, 1 October 2024 (dpa/MIA) -- Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former US president, is 100 today. He is the first US president to have lived to be 100.

Carter has been receiving end-of-life hospice care since February 2023 at his home in the tiny Georgia town of Plains.

According to his family, he is determined to cast his vote in the November election for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris, who like Carter is a Democrat, is to face off against Trump on Nov. 5.

The former president has been "more alert and interested in politics" in recent days, his grandson Jason Carter told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper back in August.

"I'm only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris," the former president told his son Chip, as recounted by Jason to the newspaper.

Carter served one term in office, from 1977 to 1981, and then became known for his humanitarian efforts and human rights initiatives in his long post-presidency.

Carter's wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, died last November at the age of 96.
