Skopje, 27 July 2022 (MIA) – The Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) reported Wednesday the confirmation of a new case of African swine fever. According to the Veterinary Institute at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the disease has been registered in the village of Moshtitsa, Makedonska Kamenitsa municipality, at a farm utilizing an extensive system of pig farming. The FVA has already notified pig farmers about the new case of African swine fever. “After a report about possible disease at the farm, an official inspection was carried out by the FVA, and after the laboratory testing of samples taken from two dead pigs, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine confirmed the presence of the disease. All necessary measures to destroy the virus have been taken at the farm, and currently an epidemiological investigation is being done to determine the cause,” said FVA director, Nikolche Babovski. The FVA issued a new decision mandating control and protective measures for the suppression and control of the disease in the high-risk zone (all municipalities bordering Bulgaria and Serbia), in the zone of the infected area (covers hunting grounds in a radius of 20km from the primary hotspot) and the entire territory of North Macedonia. “The FVA has officially notified the World Organization for Animal Health and the European Commission about the appearance of a new African swine fever hotspot,” said Babovski. ad/ba/
