Skopje, 21 August 2021 (MIA) – The role and future activities of NATO following latest developments in Afghanistan as well as the need to further accelerate the evacuation of nationals of member states and partners and Afghan civilians engaged by NATO and other international organizations in the past 20 years willing to leave the country were discussed at NATO’s extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers. Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani also participated in the meeting via videolink. At the meeting, Minister Osmani informed his counterparts about the government’s decision to temporary offer refuge to Afghan civilians who were part of humanitarian missions and helped NATO allies, the Ministry said in a press release. “It was noted that it is expected the Taliban to adhere to the commitments they have taken over and not to offer support to international terrorism all the while equal human rights for everyone are provided in the country. Otherwise, they face sanctions and international isolation,” said the press release. Minister Osmani urged that the Alliance keeps its focus on the humanitarian aspect, primarily resumption of the evacuation operation. “In close coordination with the allies, we’ve managed to evacuate our nationals from Afghanistan and I want to thank you for the assistance. We still believe it should be our primary mission, to provide safe departure of all our citizens from Afghanistan. Evacuation of local Afghan personal and their families that had worked for us in the past 20 years is as important,” stressed Osmani. The Minister also called on focus to be put on addressing threats from instigating terror attacks from Afghanistan abroad.
