FM Osmani addresses high-level segment of UN Human Rights Council session

Skopje, 26 February 2024 (MIA) – The promotion and protection of human rights as the basis of the constitutional order, as well as the commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation with the goal of respecting and safeguarding human rights serve as the basis of the foreign policy of the Republic of North Macedonia, said Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani in a video statement Monday at the high-level segment of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.

The country’s top diplomat said North Macedonia demonstrated this best during its OSCE Chairpersonship last year under the slogan “It’s About People”, placing the focus on "addressing discrimination and intolerance, fight against human trafficking, freedom of the media, youth and civil society, violence against women and gender equality".

“Osmani reminded of North Macedonia’s candidacy for membership in the Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 period and voiced hope that the country will be given a chance to actively participate, for the second time, in the work of the UN’s Human Rights Council, which remains a crucial forum for discussion regarding the tackling of challenges that endanger human rights and freedoms,” said the Ministry.

Heads of government and state, as well as foreign ministers will participate in the high-level segment of the session, which lasts from February 26 through to April 5, said the Ministry.
