Flood death toll in Spain's Valencia region soars to 155

Madrid, 31 October 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The number of people killed by the devastating floods in the hard-hit Spanish region of Valencia has risen to at least 155, the regional government said on Thursday.

There were another three victims in the regions of Andalusia and Castile-La Mancha, meaning the total death toll in Spain stands at 158.

Dozens of people remain missing.

During Tuesday's extremely heavy rainfall - in some areas as much water fell in one day as would normally come down in a year - rivers burst their banks.

The floodwaters destroyed houses and swept away trees, people and vehicles.

In some places in the Valencia region, which is popular with tourists, up to 490 millimetres of rain were recorded.

Earlier figures put the death toll at 95.
