Elmau, 28 June 2022 (dpa/MIA) - The G7 group of wealthy nations is expected to conclude its three-day summit in the Bavarian Alps on Tuesday with a major financial pledge towards efforts to ward off a looming hunger crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States plan to issue a declaration summarizing progress made at the summit at the Schloss Elmau resort, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz - this year's host - is scheduled to give a press conference. The war in Ukraine, now in its fifth month, is preventing grain from leaving the country's ports and making food more expensive globally, with experts and aid groups warning of a potential for famine in parts of Africa. Moscow blames Western sanctions for the food crisis. G7 leaders projected a signal of unity in the face of Russian invasion of Ukraine and seemed to make some progress on issues including reducing dependence on Russian energy imports, punitive measures against Russia and supporting Ukraine's war effort. US President Joe Biden is also set to meet British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and Scholz at 10 am (0800 GMT) on the sidelines of the summit. All G7 leaders except Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will travel to Madrid after the G7 summit to attend a meeting of NATO leaders that will be instrumental in firming up defence policies in the wake of the invasion.
