Ex-minister Janakievski on conditional release as of June 17 after Appellate Court upholds appeal

Ex-minister Janakievski on conditional release as of June 17 after Appellate Court upholds appeal

Skopje, 12 March 2024 (MIA) – The Skopje-based Appellate Court has upheld the appeal of former Minister of Transport and Communications, Mile Janakieski, and he will be on conditional release as of June 17, 2024,  the Court said.

The Appellate Court notes that the Criminal Council has decided to reject as unfounded the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office for Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption, whereas to uphold the appeal of M.J., from Skopje, presented through his defense attorney, requesting conditional release.

"According to the decision of the Skopje-based Appellate Court, the decision on conditional release has been changed and the conditional release for M.J. instead of starting on January 16, 2025, as stated in the initial decision, will now start on June 17, 2024, provided that the accused does not commit another crime by the time the conditional release expires," reads the press release.

In February 2022, Janakieski pleaded guilty to the 'Titanic' related to election irregularities, regarding which he was initially sentenced to four years and six months in prison, after which the Appellate Court in June 2023 reduced his sentence to three years and six months.
