Evacuations as wildfire breaks out in southern Turkish resort town
Istanbul, 29 July 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Turkish authorities had to evacuate several buildings, including hotels, as a wildfire spread into residential areas in southern Turkey, according to local media. At least three hotels and 13 homes were evacuated in Marmaris, a tourism hotspot in Muğla province, local news agency Demirören reported. The fire in the İçmeler neighbourhood was brought under control and efforts are under way to cool the area, Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said in a tweet, sharing footage of aircraft dropping water on burning pine forests. There were no casualties. Turkey has been struggling with unprecedented forest fires recently. Last summer, massive blazes destroyed thousands of hectares of woodland throughout Turkey, with the Aegean and Mediterranean coastline the worst affected.
