Skopje, 15 August 2024 (MIA) - Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski signed a grant agreement Thursday with the European Union for the establishment of a National Safer Internet Center – MkSafeNet, at an event attended by EU Ambassador David Geer and project partners.
Minister Andonovski said the beginning of the project represents a resolute step towards the creation of a safer digital space for all citizens in the country, especially the youngest ones.
“In an era of rapid digitization, internet security isn’t a luxury, but a necessity. This project isn’t an isolated step, but a part of the Government’s broader strategy for the digital transformation of Macedonia. Together with comprehensive political and strategic documents and regulation, the center is a piece of the mosaic of our commitments for reforms in the process of real digitization and represents a concrete example of how cooperation with the EU brings direct benefits for our citizens,” Minister Andonovski added.
MkSafeNet will be realized in the coming 18 months and will include a study with an action plan over the concrete tasks of each stakeholder; the establishment of a center tasked with raising awareness over potential threats on the internet; the establishment of a helpline; a youth panel and an advisory board. The project is aligned with the EU Digital Services Act and the Better Internet for Kids (BIK+) strategy.
“The goal of the Government is to create a digital society where every citizen, regardless of their age, origin or abilities, will be able to securely and effectively use the benefits of modern technologies. This is an investment in our digital future, key for our economic development and the creation of a qualified workforce for the digital era,” Andonovski said.
The project is funded with EUR 673.354 from the Digital Europe Programme and Mden 10.788.800 (EUR 175.353) from the Government for 2025 and 2026.
Regarding the project’s sustainability, Minister Andonovski stressed the Government will be fully committed to ensure it continues if it provides the expected results.
