Brussels, 7 March 2022 (MIA) – EU ambassadors have reached an agreement regarding the membership applications forwarded by Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. Now, the ball is in the European Commission’s court, MIA’s Brussels correspondent reports. On Monday, the ambassadors of the 27 EU member states gave the green light for the European Commission to review the applications of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. Now, the Commission is tasked with analyzing and releasing an opinion on the possible accession of the three countries. Until now, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia were not part of the enlargement process, unlike the Western Balkans. This decision paves the way for the state of play to change, MIA’s correspondent says. It is not known yet when the Commission would release an opinion on the applications sent by the three Eastern European countries. Ukraine is currently a war-torn country, while Moldova and Georgia both have breakaway provinces, which will very likely complicate the EU accession process. Some member states, mainly those in Eastern Europe, demand swift procedure for Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova to join the bloc as a response to Russia’s military aggression. However, the EU lacks consensus on the matter as enlargement remains a sensitive issue. Any fast-track membership would have to be approved by the EU leaders, diplomats say.
