Education Ministry: Recommendations for safer schools, preventing peer violence

Skopje, 12 May 2023 (MIA) - The Ministry of Education and Science is preparing recommendations aimed at enhancing school safety and reducing peer violence. The basis of the process are conclusions from previous meeting with university professors, experts, meetings with representatives from similar institutions, as well as visits to schools where together with teachers and school workers safety measures were analyzed, the Education Ministry said in a press release on Friday.

"After finalizing the recommendations, they will be forwarded to the Government and adopted at the next meeting. Meanwhile, any constructive proposal is welcome and can be part of the plan for maintaining peace and security in schools and in building an environment where students will be focused solely on acquiring knowledge and skills, where violence will not be a topic," reads the press release.

In addition, Education Ministry will continue consultations by including social stakeholders who can help create comprehensive protocols for improving school safety and manuals in identifying and managing cases of peer violence.

"The e-mails prijavinasilstvo@mon.gov.mk and paraqitdhune@mon.gov.mk  remain active, for reporting cases of violence in schools. So far, around 20 messages have been received, some of which are from former professors suggesting how to prevent school violence, and reports from students who have been victims of some form of violence, for which the State Education Inspectorate is responsible for managing," reads the press release. ssh/sk/
