Driving licenses bearing country’s old name to remain valid until year’s end

Skopje, 12 February 2024 (MIA) – With 110 votes in favor, and none against or abstaining, Parliament adopted Monday an amendment to the Law on Traffic Safety in a fast-track procedure, extending the validity of driving licenses with the “Republic of Macedonia” name until December 31, 2024. The driving licenses bearing the country’s old name were supposed to expire on Monday midnight.

The amendments were put forward by MPs Nikola Micevski, Martin Kostovski, Vjolca Ademi, Adnan Neziri, Dimitar Apasiev and Pavle Trajanov, and received the support of all MPs present.

“The goal of the amendments is a swift solution for the issue with the personal documents. In the interest of the citizens and in order to alleviate further pressure and chaos, all party whips reached a common solution through consensus, deciding to propose amendments to the Law on Traffic Safety in a fast-track procedure. These are small changes, i.e., the provision which states February 12, 2024 [as the deadline] is being changed to December 31, 2024 or the end of the year,” said VMRO-DPMNE’s party whip, Nikola Micevski.
