Driver of Serbian bus detained, Siika Mileva tells MIA
Sofia, 15 August 2022 (MIA) – Spokesperson of Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General Office, Siika Mileva, told MIA in Sofia that the driver of the Serbian bus which overturned in a ditch near the southern Bulgarian city of Stara Zagora on the Trakia highway has been detained for 24 hours under the law of the country’s Ministry of Interior. He will be ordered not to leave Bulgaria while the investigation into the causes of the accident is ongoing.
She added that a team of Bulgarian investigators is currently in Stara Zagora, and interrogation of apparent participants in the accident is underway. Mileva couldn’t say when the children from Serbia will be able to leave Bulgaria, because under the law questioning of minors is carried out in line with a certain procedure and in the presence of their relatives or parents.
Bulgarian chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev is in Stara Zagora since last night alongside a team of investigators. Meanwhile, road safety experts have been commenting that in addition to losing control over the bus, the Serbian driver had violated Bulgarian law because he traveled from the seaside resort Sunny Beach festival to transport children in the evening and at night which is against the law.
Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar is also in Stara Zagora, visiting the children involved in the bus crash, including those staying in a hotel in the city to talk with them about their general health.
