Draft-law on protection against smoking not restrictive but European, Aliu tells MIA

Skopje, 12 January 2026 (MIA) - The draft-law on protection against smoking, which is expected to enter into force on March 1, is not restrictive but European, Health Minister Azir Aliu has told MIA.

"The draft-law is aligned with international standards and its objective is enhancement of public health. it is harmonized with global public health policies that the country has signed, including the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The law is not restrictive but European, since it sets up European health protection standards. WHO data show that over 45 percent of adults are smoking, putting us among the countries with the highest rates in Europe," says Minister Aliu.

He adds that besides a ban on smoking in public institutions and public areas, the law also bans the promotion of such products.

"The law stipulates restrictions in the digital space, so these harmful products are not promoted," says Aliu.

He notes that similar laws are applied in some neighboring countries and across Europe, the goal being for the population to quit smoking.

"A Global Youth Tobacco Survey in 2024 showed that 13.6 percent of pupils aged 13-15 use some type of tobacco product, which is a high percentage," says Aliu.

According to him, the law would also lead to lower costs for treatment of diseases caused by smoking.

"In parallel with the law, we are drafting an education and information campaign that will be implemented throughout 2026, aimed primarily at young people," says Aliu.
