Dozens killed in Gaza after Israeli strikes on Jabalia

Tel Aviv, 31 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Dozens of people were killed in Israeli attacks on Jabalia in the north of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.

Israel's army said ground troops had killed around 50 terrorists.

A doctor at the Kamal Adwan hospital in the northern Gaza Strip said at least 35 people died, including children and women. In addition, more than 200 injured people had been admitted to the hospital, Hussam Abu Safija told dpa.

The Israeli military spoke of a "large-scale attack" on a "Hamas military stronghold" in the west of the city, saying it had been used for terrorist training.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) also used aircraft in the attack.

Tunnels beneath the building collapsed due to the attack.

Hamas commander Ibrahim Biari, who was reportedly involved in the massacres in the Israeli border area on October 7, was killed in the attack, according to the IDF.

Hamas had been in control of civilian buildings in the area, the IDF said, adding the army had repeated its call to Gaza residents to flee to the south.

The army has told Gazans several times to head to the south of the narrow, densely populated strip, though Israeli airstrikes are also hitting areas in the south.

The Hamas-controlled health ministry in the Gaza Strip, "hundreds of people" were injured and killed in the attack on Jabalia, though it did not give an exact figure. The information could not be independently verified at first.
