Dozens injured after Russia bombards Ukrainian cities

Kyiv, 8 January 2024 (dpa/MIA) — The Russian air force once again bombarded Ukraine with missiles on Monday, leaving dozens injured.

In the city of Novomoskovsk, 24 people, including five children, were injured, public broadcaster Suspilne reported.

A residential building was also damaged in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhya, according to the head of the regional military administration, Yuri Malashko.

So far, four people are known to have been injured in the Zaporizhzhya onslaught. The attack with cruise and ballistic missiles caused a total of five large explosions in the city.

Four strikes were reported in the eastern city of Kharkiv. According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, mainly industrial companies were targeted. There was one injury reported so far, he said on Telegram.

Firefighters extinguished the resulting fires and in the small town of Smiyiv in the Kharkiv region, several people had to be rescued from the rubble of a house.

Explosions were also reported in the cities of Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih and Khmelnytskyi.

According to the Ukrainian armed force, almost a dozen strategic bombers fired cruise missiles at targets in Ukraine. Ballistic and hypersonic missiles of the Kinzhal (Dagger) type were also deployed alongside drones.

Air-raid alerts were issued throughout Ukraine.

The country has been fending off a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022. Ukraine hit back last year but of late Moscow has again started deploying a near-daily barrage of missiles.
