Donev: Country’s path is strict fulfillment of all criteria and agreements undertaken before EU
Skopje, 29 October 2022 (MIA) – The incorporation of Bulgarians in the Constitutional preamble is one of the conditions that North Macedonia has to fulfill as a commitment not only in the bilateral protocol of the Friendship Treaty but also the of so-called French proposal. This is an obligation not only towards Bulgaria but also other EU member-states, said Bulgarian Prime Minister Galab Donev on Saturday.
On Bulgaria’s guarantees it will not put any more obstacles on the European path if the constitutional changes are made, PM Donev said North Macedonia’s EU membership path must be signed off by all 27 member-states.
“Therefore, the path you should move on is the strict fulfillment of all criteria and agreements undertaken before the EU as a whole. Bulgaria is part of the EU and Bulgaria set its conditions, but the conditions established by all Union member-states are signed by all 27 countries. This needs to be fulfilled in order to hold the first intergovernmental conference that marks the start of the EU accession negotiations. This is what the Republic of North Macedonia must aspire to,” Donev told reporters.
He thanked counterpart Kovachevski and the Government for having a clear and European position, one that will “take the country on the right path to EU membership, a world of more values, freedoms and well-being.”
The Bulgarian PM added that today’s start of the works on the eastern end of Corridor VIII railway is one of the projects and action that governments have to undertake towards improving the people’s lives.
“Everything else only hinders our path towards common values and well-being of both nations,” added Donev.
