Designer Paco Rabanne dies at age of 88

Paris, 3 February 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Spanish designer Paco Rabanne has died at the age of 88, his business associates confirmed to dpa on Friday. No immediate cause of death was available.

"The House of Paco Rabanne wishes to honour our visionary designer and founder who passed away today at the age of 88," according to an Instagram post from the Puig cosmetics group, under whose umbrella Rabanne's label runs.

"Among the most seminal fashion figures of the 20th century, his legacy will remain a constant source of inspiration.

"We are grateful to Monsieur Rabanne for establishing our avant-garde heritage and defining a future of limitless possibilities," the company said.

Rabanne, born in 1934 in San Sebastián, Spain, became known for his flamboyant clothing designs in the 1960s. Unlike other fashion designers at the time, he used little satin or velvet, instead playing with materials such as aluminium or plastic.

In recent years, he was best known for his perfume line.

Rabanne was considered a self-taught fashion designer. His mother worked for the fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.

In the 1960s, Rabanne founded his eponymous company, which has been fully owned by the Spanish cosmetics group Puig for several decades.

According to media reports, the fashion designer died in the French region of Brittany near Brest.
