Deputy PM Dimitrov, French senators discuss EU priorities and enlargement policy
Skopje, 13 September 2021 (MIA) – Priorities on the EU agenda in the coming period, enlargement policy and French support in the efforts to adopt North Macedonia’s negotiating framework that should reflect the new enlargement methodology initiated by France were in the focus of discussions between Deputy PM for European Affairs Nikola Dimitrov and a delegation of the French Senate on Monday.
The visit of the French delegation is in the context of the preparations for the French EU Presidency in the first half of 2022, the Deputy PM’s Office said in a press release.
Dimitrov referred to the comprehensive reforms for transposition of the European values within the Europe at Home Agenda, while adding that domination of bilateral issues in the enlargement process is contrary to the principles of the new methodology, which intention is to strengthen the credibility of the region’s European prospects.
“North Macedonia is the best example on how to ensure a breakthrough in the region, a model demonstrating that the negotiating process can be a true success story that enhances the Union’s power of transformation. We showed that we are prepared for the European challenges that represent a contest in meeting the standards of rule of law, democratic institutions and protection of human rights. We can meet all criteria as long as they are within the European spirit, and that is why we find the French support very important. Validation of our achievements is important primarily for the citizens of this region, especially the youth, who see the start of the accession process as the green light for their European future,” noted Dimitrov.
The French senators saluted the country’s progress in key reform areas, with a focus on the “Fundamentals” cluster and the contribution to regional and European stability, noting that North Macedonia is France and EU’s credible partner when it comes to the region’s Europeanization and the joint management of the global challenges. They expressed strong support for implementation of the Council decision over the start of the accession negotiations, thus making the new enlargement methodology operational, but also bringing the countries’ nations closer.
Interlocutors also referred to inter-parliamentary cooperation, highlighting the importance of transferring French experiences in the strengthening of democratic capacities and people’s trust. In addition, they tackled the presence of French businesses in the country and enhancement of bilateral cooperation in the field.
The French delegation includes Marta de Sidrak, chair of the Senate’s France-Western Balkans Friendship Group, Arnaud Bazin-chair of the North Macedonia friendship group, Vincent Seguin-chair of the Montenegro friendship group, Mickaël Vallet-chair of the Serbia friendship group, and Guillaume Renaudineau-secretary of the France-Western Balkans Friendship Group.
