Democratic Movement founders gather signatures they need

Skopje, 4 August 2023 (MIA) — Izet Mexhiti's Democratic Movement said Friday they collected the signatures they needed to officially register the new political party.

A press release from the party said that hundreds of supporters had given their signatures at notary offices across the country "in favor of the establishment of a movement that promises positive changes for the Albanians in the Republic of North Macedonia."

"The Democratic Movement's organizing council predicted that the signatures would be gathered throughout the day but in less than three hours, the signature collection was successfully completed," the release said.

After its registration, Democratic Movement is set to officially launch on August 13.

On July 17, former DUI vice president and lawmaker Izet Mexhiti announced that he would found a new political party together with MPs Merita Koxhaxhiku and Kastriot Rexhepi.

Asked if his party would be ready for a potential snap election, Mexhiti said that was the reason behind trying to establish Democratic Movement promptly, "to be ready for any kind challenges that may arise in the meantime." mr/
