Delegations lay flowers at monument of 1963 Skopje earthquake victims

Skopje, 26 July 2023 (MIA) - On the 60th anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Skopje, the President of North Macedonia, delegations of the Government, the Parliament and the City of Skopje, as well as ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic and consular offices in the country, laid on Wednesday flowers at the monument of the earthquake victims at the Skopje-based Butel cemetery. 

 

 

The Government delegation was led by Deputy PM for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj alongiside Culture Minister Bisera Kostadinovska-Stojchevska and Deputy Education Minister Agim Nuhiu. 

 

 

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit Skopje on July 26, 1963. In the earthquake, the city lost many citizens, suffered irreparable damage, but won the battle with the biggest natural disaster.

 

"We pay tribute today to the victims of the earthquake and extend our immense gratitude to everyone from all over the world who helped rebuild and revive the city. Skopje has become a city of solidarity, recognized for uniting the world's messages of compassion and sharing the grief and loss of our fellow citizens, " the Government said in a press release. 

 

 

This year on July 26, when the earthquake remembrance day is observed, the Ministry of Culture and the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia are organizing a series of events to mark the 60th anniversary since the massive quake that shook the capital city of Skopje.
