Skopje, 9 November 2023 (MIA) – Minister of Defense Slavjanka Petrovska held a meeting Thursday in Bucharest with her Romanian counterpart, Angel Tîlvăr, during which they spoke about the global and European security situation; activities for the strengthening of NATO security; the need to guarantee stability in the region; as well as ways to promote defense cooperation between North Macedonia and Romania, said the Ministry of Defense in a press release.

“We believe both North Macedonia and Romania are leading a pragmatic foreign and security policy with the basic goal of putting an end to the military actions and restoring peace and security in Europe and the world. Our two countries understand the need for responsible behavior which, instead of divisions and suffering, calls for integration and unity,” said Minister Petrovska at the meeting.

Petrovska added that the Macedonian soldiers who are participating in the NATO multinational battle group in Romania will continue to provide their own contribution to the strengthening of security on the eastern flank of the Alliance, including Romania.

“The 360 degrees approach isn’t just a declarative commitment, but each member state must contribute to it. The task of our country is to guarantee our defense system and to participate in the construction of the Alliance’s defense system,” said the Minister.

According to the Defense Ministry, Petrovska expressed gratitude for the strong Romanian support for North Macedonia’s Euro-integrations and noted that the integration processes are a security issue for the entire region, and consequently must be a priority for every politician and government in the countries of the region.

“Divisions won’t bring any good to anyone,” said Petrovska, adding that the history of the European Union shows that reconciliation and unity are the only path towards a better future for the next generations.

In terms of bilateral cooperation, according to the Defense Ministry, Petrovska and Tîlvăr assessed that it is on a high level and voiced interest and readiness for a greater development in the future. The Ministry noted that 17 joint activities are planned for 2023, 7 of which are to be held in North Macedonia. North Macedonia and Romania have been cooperating in the field of defense since 1998.

“Minister Petrovska’s visit will continue Thursday with a visit to the Otopeni barracks, where she will meet with the Macedonian soldiers who are a part of NATO’s multinational forces,” said the Ministry.
