Death toll rises to 4 after Magdeburg Christmas market car ramming

Magdeburg, Germany, 21 December 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The number of people killed at a Christmas market in Magdeburg has risen to four, and 41 people were seriously injured after a car ploughed into the crowd, security sources said on Saturday.

Several German media outlets, including the Bild newspaper, reported that more than 200 people were injured in Friday's attack, a significant increase on the original number of 60 thought to have been hurt.

Police are continuing their investigations after arresting a suspect, 50, who drove a rental car into the crowd at the market.

On Saturday morning, police initially responded cautiously when asked whether they considered the incident an attack, stating that they were still in the process of investigating.

The suspect remains in police custody and authorities believing he acted alone.
